Successful communication should never be a monologue.

I find it amazing that, as leaders move into increasingly more senior positions in an organization, they become more talkative. I joke around by saying that senior leaders absolutely love to hear the sound of their own voice! Steps to Successful Communication  

I have often had sales conversations with a prospect where I had not once talked about a product or service but instead talked through questions to the prospect. And at the end, they would arrive at a place where they say something like, “How do we work together on this?” 

To get to that master level of successful communication, here is training list for you: 

1. Tune in. Master communicators are brilliant listeners. Not just hearing and thinking about what you going to say next but actually listening. 
2. Turn off. Remove anything that is going to be a distraction for you. The distraction might even be a long ‘to-do’ list you have back at your desk. Practice turning off that nagging thought that you have other shit to do. 
3. Be keenly aware of your body language and how much you are talking. Engage the other person by leaning in and acknowledging the other person by saying things like: “Yes.” “OK.” or “Tell me more.” 
4. Be a question Ninja.  Practice and get good at your repertoire of questions that uncover what is really going on or where you want to take the conversation. Question Ninjas rarely use closed ended questions that start with Why, When, When and Where.  They specialize in wording their questions to start with What or How.
