How can you be a leader, even if you don’t have a fancy title?
Do you need a fancy title on your business card to be a leader? Do you need the corner office, with a floor to ceiling window to be a leader? What about a company car? An Executive Assistant?
I know that you know the answer is “No.” Being a leader is a state of mind; it is not a title or a position. However, today, thinking like a leader is more important than ever. If you do not have the fancy title, or if you are an entrepreneur, or even if you’re working away in ‘Cubicle Land’ and you have no ‘Team,’ you still have to sell ideas and motivate people to follow your ideas. You still have to solve problems and inspire people to agree to your solutions. You still have to initiate change, take care of customers, look for ways to control costs, improve productivity, take risks, learn from your mistakes, communicate and help other people achieve.
It all starts with a mindset. When you look in the mirror, you need to see a leader. You need to see someone that gets things done, and done better than anyone else. You are a self-starter. You are not the one that has to be managed to get things done. If you left the organization today, it would be difficult to replace you.
When you think like a leader and act accordingly, the value of your own personal stock will sky-rocket and… You will wake up one-day soon in the corner office.
