We are bombarded daily with countless emails, text messages, phone calls, social media posts, web noise and over 5,000 marketing messages (or one every 12 seconds). Then we have the added pressures of constant self-improvement… be the perfect parent, the perfect friend, take care of aging parents, get fit and eat better. From a personal health and development perspective, there are absolutely a few opportunities to grow, learn and expand. But how is one supposed to fit it all in?
Yet, growing, learning and expanding our universal knowledge and taking better care of ourselves is exactly what we need to be doing.
How then does one get it all done?
The solution I use, and have practiced for over 25 years is simply this: I disconnect. These days people refer to what I do as a ‘Digital Detox.’
My disconnect is simple and easy to follow – that is once you get over the naked feeling of not being ‘connected.’ I schedule into my calendar 2 short hours one day each week where I don’t accept any meetings. When that two-hour time slot arrives, I leave all technology behind and go for either a walk, a drive, a Float (this is a cool deprivation tank where there is next to no sensory stimulation), or simply just sit on the bench in a park.
What I discover when I am ‘disconnected’ is this…
Believe me… Disconnecting to improve your personal health and development is absolutely the best way to clear your mind and see the possibilities you never imagined.
