Most of us have been here before… We tell a close friend or family member about some new business goal we’ve set for the new year, and they respond with: “Why do you want to do that?” or “Oh, you never be able to achieve that.” Motivating isn’t it?
What’s really happening with these so called ‘good friends and relatives’ isn’t their fault. They think that they are looking out for you; however, subconsciously they fear you moving ahead, achieving your goals and leaving them behind.
Moving yourself ahead in your career can sometimes get lonely. You can easily feel like you’re pushing yourself forward while everyone else is pulling you back. When I coach other executives and leaders, this is the single biggest issue I see to the individual’s growth… the lack of support from people close to them.
There is help though. One of the best things that you can do is find someone that will push you instead of pulling you back. A Mastermind Partner, Coach or Mentor.
Coaches
The top athletes in the world have coaches. The CEO’s of Fortune sized organizations have coaches. Over 20,000 senior executives worldwide belong to an organization called Vistage (called TEC in Canada and Australia), which is an organization of professional coaches guiding these CEOs. Why? Because they know that to be better today than you were yesterday, you need someone that will push you.
Mentors
Many leaders have mentors. A mentor is someone that you trust and admire for what they have achieved in their lives. There are mentors everywhere. In your organization, in community groups, etc. A mentor is someone that helps you build within yourself a strength that they have. A good mentor will show you the way.
Mastermind Partners
Some great leaders I know and work with get the push they need from a Mastermind Partner. A mastermind is someone that works with you as a partner and conversely, you work with them. It is a symbiotic relationship where you share your goals and aspirations and they share theirs. You then help each other build a plan and hold each other accountable on commitments, measures and dates.
The very best in the world do not go it alone. The very best in the world surround themselves with people that will push them, not with people afraid to see them succeed and perhaps leave them behind.
