Some of the best lessons I have been lucky enough to receive have come from the most unexpected places. My children and my pets.
From my kids, I learned how to use the most important tool that a leader needs to have. To listen. The Dalai Lama once said that if we are talking, we are only repeating what we already know. When we are listening, we will learn something new. Children have some amazing ideas, insights and perspectives. So do the people we work with. When I learned how to truly listen, I discovered some amazing lessons.
From my pets, I learned to be positive as often I as I can. Right now, we live with a crazy Border Collie named “Jasper.” He is full of amazing energy and is always, and I mean always, ready to go as hard and fast as he can. Jasper’s tail is always wagging. He never seems to get disappointed or depressed. Whatever challenge comes his way, he meets it head on.
